Comfy cruiser and race track warrior in one
Unfortunately for Jaguar I own an E Type. It is the most beautiful car in the world and that’s not me saying that because there’s one in my garage the E Type has come out on top in numerous classic car magazine readers’ polls.
Why is it unfortunate for Jaguar? Because I can’t help but compare the new F Type to the E Type.
Unfortunately, Jaguar could not have built it any differently. I doubt there’s a single feature of the 1961 E Type that would pass modern safety regulations.
Pedestrian impact? Ooh, no, look at those nasty ankle chopping chrome bumpers. And Isofix fittings for a child seat? Not quite.
Before we come to driving the F Type we’ll get a few other gripes out of the way, shall we?
The door handles are silly. When you push the plipper they pop out of the door. Why? It’s fairly obvious where they are. Just another unnecessary complication and another thing to go wrong.
The steering wheel on my old E Type is a lovely slim wooden thing that sits in your palms. It’s not very crash friendly and there’s nowhere for an airbag to live. Why has Jaguar made a steering wheel that is fatter and softer than an uncooked baguette?
Now for the good bit: driving it. Jaguar gives you a choice of three models.
And finally there’s the F Type V8 which has the supercharged 5.0 litre V8 from the XKR with a mighty 495bhp.

We’ve driven all three so this week you’re getting three road tests for the price of one.
Let’s focus on the cheapest version, though at 58,500 the entry level F Type is hardly a bargain.
We’ve whinged that we all thought the new Jag sports car was going to be a Porsche Boxster rival and would therefore start at 40 odd grand. But no, it’s more than 10k dearer than the Porsche.
The supercharged V6 sounds great. There’s a button you can press to open flaps in the exhaust system to make it sound even more throaty and naughty, though after a while the noise gets a bit irritating especially as it sounds rather faked and manufactured, like the soundtrack to a driving game.
There’s no manual gearbox available, just an eight speed automatic which you can control via the gearstick or using slinky gold anodised paddles behind the wheel.
You sit low in the new Jag, surrounded by the big transmission tunnel in the middle and door to your side and there’s no sexy view over the bonnet like there is in the E Type. The car feels big, as big as the XK.
That feeling starts to disappear when you start driving the F. At 1,570kg it’s heavier than a Porsche 911 cabriolet and a lot heavier than a Boxster.
The steering and suspension are top notch, with a smooth ride and very accurate changes of direction. You can switch the suspension to Dynamic mode which stiffens it up but doesn’t make the ride harsh.
It doesn’t feel nimble like a sports car, but it also feels a lot more sporty than a big heavy GT car like Mercedes’ SL or Jag’s own XK8.
This 340bhp model would be quick enough for most punters, Cheap Michael Kors especially American buyers (almost half the F Types built will be sold in the US) but stepping up another 40bhp to the S model transforms the car into something that is considerably more sporty. Forty extra nags doesn’t sound much but they turn the Jag into a seriously quick car.
You can imagine then, what difference the V8’s extra 115bhp on top of the S’s Michael Kors Outlet 380bhp makes. The F Type V8 S is a monster: 0 60mph in 4.0sec and a top speed of 186mph. And wow, does it sound good!
This top of the range F costs 79,985, which Jaguar will argue is good value for a car with almost 500bhp and 911 beating performance.
The six cylinder S model is clearly the pick of the bunch. Jaguar says that it expects the three versions to sell in equal numbers. I say go for the middle version.
Its 380bhp gives it serious performance, its standard adaptive suspension is brilliant and gives the car a split personality christian louboutin shoes replica of comfy cruiser and race track warrior.
